Maintenance for Everyday Living

The idea of maintenance struck me recently as an interesting subject. My usual thoughts when I hear this terminology go immediately to my car. But more and more, the term is being used to describe our physical and mental conditioning.

The act of maintaining means that we have to preserve or retain what we already have. It is not considered a rebirth of opportunity nor an act that pushes us beyond an already achieved state, mental, physical, or otherwise. There is a joy that comes with moving forward rather than just maintaining. Every success not only includes maintenance, but it also can have additional benefits that help us favorably partition of lives by counting our wins and celebrating acts of kindness. It is not just the fifty sit-ups that are executed in the early morning hours, it is the ability to change our eating habits so the fifty sit-ups actually will have physical benefit.

Maintenance is sustaining, improvement is rewarding. Most people today are only in the mode to maintain dealing with life's twists and turns as they occur. Recognize the opportunity for you to seize the moment when the moment only calls for maintaining. Turn the moment into

"The past leads to us if we force it to. Otherwise it contains us in its asylum with no gates. We make history or it makes us." - Marge Piercy

"In the history of the world, no one has ever washed a rented car." -Lawrence Summers
