"A man who lives right, and is right, has more power in his silence than another has by his words."
--Phillips Brooks,American clergyman and writer
Giving back provides a unique gratification that thoughtfully feeds our inner self. To be gratified about an accomplishment, a good deed, a hard earned grade, an act of kindness, or simply providing someone with a kind word is by any measure living your life right.
As an emotion, gratification can provide us with complimenting feelings that do not have to be witnessed by others, only given by yourself. This emotion has a tendency to feed on itself in that the more gratified you are, the more you want to continue to provide others a way to give something back. It feeds us with good feelings and a sense of accomplishment.
I was recently speaking with a friend who is a senior citizen and he said that he was gratified with the life that he had lead. I asked what made him feel the gratification that he genuinely displayed everyday. He said that life was unpredictable and that we had to make our way based on what is thrown at us. If we do well, then we have a right to be gratified. No regrets from him.
Talking about gratification with others provides an outlet for both you and them. We all recognize that life can be more than challenging everyday. It's how we handle the difficulties that come our way that make us either gratified us or exasperate us.
