It seems that no matter where we look, the world is surrounding us with a chaos that melts our business perspective like an ice cream cone on a hot summer’s day. Threats of war, terrorism, a shrinking economy, stock market woes, all have a profound effect on our businesses and well as our personal lives. I recently sat with a group of CEO’s from major US corporations. One of the topics of discussion was Homeland Security and the agency’s impact on business. I heard stories that ranged from increased shipping precautions to demands of security cameras for empty skid lots. The financial costs and the demands being placed on business were almost overwhelming to listen to, much less to implement. But what if we didn’t take these steps? Wouldn’t the price we pay be greater if a disaster occurred, terrorist or otherwise?

The business environment today calls for many things. Among them are creativity and resourcefulness. Every individual in every organization has a chance to make a difference. All too often we let the daily issues blur our approach to getting the job done and creating forward motion for ourselves and the business at hand. It becomes our job to mobilize the resources we have at our disposal and create an atmosphere where success is inherent.

Forward motion starts with small steps, not giant strides. This could be as simple as a re-dedication to make positive things happen for our company, our families, and ourselves. It is easy to feel discouraged when the world is in chaos, but less likely to have an impact if our focus is simply dedicated to forward motion.
